Farewell to Dean Timothy Tong

Faculty, staff, students, and members of the GW administration, board of trustees, and the SEAS National Advisory Council gathered on June 11th to bid farewell to SEAS Dean Timothy Tong. Tong stepped down on June 30, 2008, after serving as dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science for eight years. He will begin his new appointment as president of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University on January 1, 2009.

At the reception hosted for Dean Tong, President Steven Knapp and Board of Trustees Member Mark Hughes joined other members of the SEAS and GW community in congratulating Tong on his new position and thanking him for his service to the School and University.

While the University finalizes its efforts to select a new dean for the School, Professor Thomas Mazzuchi, chairman of the Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering, will serve as the school's interim dean.

SEAS Celebrates Graduation 2008

SEAS honored its 592 graduates at the 2008 SEAS Celebration on Saturday evening, May 18th. With a full complement of parents, siblings, spouses, children, and other relatives and friends present to honor their accomplishments, the engineers and computer scientists individually walked across the stage at the Smith Center to receive their diplomas, handshakes, and congratulations from Dean Tong and the SEAS faculty.

The ceremony included the presentation of 29 student awards to recognize various forms of student achievement; the keynote address by Mr. Mark Hughes (BA '69, MS '77), president (retired) of the System and Network Solutions Group at Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC); a student speech by Faezeh Razjouyan, the winner of the SEAS Celebration speech competition; and the recognition of each graduate.

After the ceremony, graduates, their guests, and SEAS faculty, staff, and alumni, gathered at the Marvin Center for a post-Celebration reception.

The GW Engineering Hall of Fame recognizes SEAS alumni who during their careers have made sustained and meritorious contributions to engineering, technology, and/or management. These individuals bring distinction to GW through their significant achievements and contributions to their professions, the University, and society-at-large.

SEAS Inducts Newest Members Into the Order of the Engineer

Inductees at the May 9, 2008 ceremony Inductees at the May 14, 2008 ceremony

The Engineer Alumni Association (EAA) and the SEAS Engineers’ Council hosted the 2008 Order of the Engineer induction ceremony on Friday, May 9th at Alumni House here on campus. Twenty-five graduating seniors, two Fall 2007 graduates, and one alumnus were inducted into the Order of the Engineer.

SEAS alumnus and inductee Ashok K. Jha (B.S. '85, M.S. '92), the CEO of ADNET Systems, Inc., gave the keynote address at the ceremony. He traced his professional career as an engineer and entrepreneur, and he illustrated how rigorous engineering and ethical principles helped him build ADNET Systems into a $50 million firm providing IT, engineering, science, and education services to the federal government.

Also speaking during the ceremony were Mr. Howard Davis, the director of SEAS undergraduate student services, advising, and records, and Professor Richard Soland. Mr. Davis presented the history of the Order, and Professor Richard Soland spoke about the significance of the ring that members of the Order wear and then led the new inductees through the Obligation of the Order. Following this, EAA President J.P. Blackford talked briefly about the EAA and led a toast to the new members. New inductees Amir Aslani and Faezeh Razjouyan made concluding remarks.

EAA member Fatemeh Razjouyan served as mistress or ceremonies and worked on the planning committee.

At a second induction ceremony, held on May 14th in Tompkins Hall, fifteen additional graduating seniors were inducted into the Order. Mr. Davis and Professor Soland also participated in this second ceremony.
